Wanted to mention that I've hit upon yet another project that would need this capability. A product presentation site that requires presenting the product in the 3D viewport, but also requires presenting assembly options that're mixed into selection menus (like say car rims). It'd lead to hundreds of canvases, with at least a dozen or so on screen and being animated.
