Hm, of course if you need to decode in software the conversion is a performance drag, and if you need to store the linearized value, gamma convert it and restore it into an intermdiary (byte) buffer for blitting, there's going to be more potential for banding. So I'm not sure how feasible the fallback is for the case of a non hardware accelerated compositor that can't inject an on the fly conversion inside the blitting operation.
