So the overhead of DOM API calls will be at least significant for matrix
inversion and definitely dominant for the cheaper operations.

Just for scale, the overhead of a DOM API call with no arguments is on the order of 20-30 CPU cycles in modern browsers, as far as I can tell. If you have arguments, obviously there's more work; figure another 20-30 CPU cycles per argument...
