We agree 100%.
As you pointed out we're talking about several different problems here
1) how to render to more than 1 canvas
2) how to share resources across contexts in the same page
3) how to share resources across contexts in workers.
The acquire/release thing is only suggested for #3
#1 and #2 used to be just #2 but as you pointed out there's a better solution for most if not all cases.
