As for software rendering, I'm not sure how to explicitly enable it. Alan got Chrome to do this a while back. Or you could just hit yourself in the face with a hammer to get a similar effect

If you're on windows, Chrome and Firefox default to using a DirectX 9 back end. Firefox can be switched to use GL by changing the "webgl.prefer-native-gl" setting in the about:config page. Not sure if chrome can make that switch.
