#1 OpenGL ES specifies depth textures as unsigned int and short, OpenGL/Direct3D specifies them as floats. Correct me if this is a wrong impression.

opengl depth textures were originally only integer (GL_DEPTH_COMPONENT(16|24|32)), later a float format was introduced (GL_DEPTH_COMPONENT32F).
I don't know about D3D, but I'll bet it is similar.

#2 Support for attaching cube side targets as depth textures is doubtful.

it is useful, e.g. you may want to create an environment map AND preserve also depth values (depth buffer) per face rather than just color values (color buffer).
