It will be rare to find an implementation of WebGL that has greater than 8 bit color. In fact, the WebGL spec allows for drawing buffers  that have less than 8 bits, as in 565 (16 bit) color buffers. But you're speaking in absolutes. It doesn't "need" to be done with greater precision. You just get a better quality result if you do, right?

It seems like this is all coming down to performance vs. quality. sRGB for the best quality, or linear for the least computation and therefore the best performance.
