That should be possible. Download your data with XMLHttpRequest set responseType to "arraybuffer". This gives you binary. Split/decompress that binary anyway you want into the FileAPI. Use FileAPI URLs with images. (note: I have not tried it)
Tangental, but a quick note: you're better off using "blob" than "arraybuffer" for this, at least once it's widely supported (FF6 does, stable Chrome doesn't just yet). It's easier to pass to things like FileAPI and createObjectURL without making extra copies.
