Helping to make the SDL cross-platform library more attractive for mobile/Android developers, the latest SDL2 code has an initial OpenSL ES implementation. OpenSL ES is the Khronos Group’s effort as an industry-standard sound library for embedded hardware while offering up 3D positional audio support, optional integration with OpenMAX, audio effects, and other advanced sound capabilities. Android released an updated version of the Android NDK bringing it to revision 7. “Android NDK r7 includes a number of build system improvements and bug fixes, but most importantly it gives you access to two new sets of APIs”, wrote Xavier Ducrohet on the Android Developers Blog. The two new Khronos Group APIs are: OpenMAX AL 1.0.1 for Low-level streaming multimedia, which provides a direct, efficient path for low-level streaming multimedia; and OpenSL ES used for audio decoding into PCM. Google’s recently announced Android 4.0 platform, and related Ice Cream Sandwich SDK, include many new media capabilities. One very nice addition is the introduction for low-level streaming multimedia. To support this low-level streaming, the platform introduces a new native API based on the Khronos OpenMAX AL 1.0.1 API. This API is implemented on the same underlying services as the platform’s existing OpenSL ES API, so developers can make use of both APIs together if needed. SRS Labs, Inc announced the availability of its SRS TruMedia™ audio enhancement technology suite for Android 2.3 mobile devices. SRS’ TruMedia is the industry’s first and only publicly offered audio technology suite designed specifically to be part of a solution of the recently-introduced Khronos OpenSL ES 1.1 standard. SRS’ TruMedia Product is based on a published Khronos Specification, and is expected to pass the Khronos ConformanceTestingProcess. The Khronos Group today announced OpenSL ES, a new 3D audio specification to bring advanced sound capabilities to any mobile phone or mobile operating system. Companies announcing support of the new standard at launch include Google and SRS. The latest version of Google’s mobile OS, Android 2.3 Gingerbread has arrived on the scene with a few significant additions. Android is one of the first mobile devices to offer a software implementation of the Khronos Groups OpenSL ES™ API and EGL library. OpenSL ES is a royalty-free, cross-platform, hardware-accelerated audio API tuned for embedded systems and EGL™ is an interface between Khronos rendering APIs and the underlying native platform window system.

The OpenSL ES workgroup is pleased to announce that OpenSL ES version 1.0.1 has been released and is available for download. The update to the specification includes clarifications and minor bug fixes. Among the bug fixes are adjustments to make sure that OpenSL ES is aligned with OpenMAX AL 1.0. The OpenSL ES 1.0.1 specification is available in the Khronos public registry here (pdf), and the header files are available here.
