Amazon launches new EC2 GPU instances for high-performance 3D Graphics in the cloud

Amazon launched a new type of instance for its EC2 cloud computing platform that is specifically designed for applications that require 3D graphics capabilities. Using these new instances, Amazon argues, its users can now “build high-performance DirectX, OpenGL, CUDA, and OpenCL applications and services without making expensive up-front capital investments.” Amazon is making two of these new GPU instance types available for now. The g2.2xlarge version comes with 15 GB memory, 60 GB of local storage, 26 EC2 Compute Units (that’s an Intel Sandy Bridge processor running at 2.6 GHz) and a single NVIDIA Kepler GK104 graphics card (with 1536 CUDA cores). The larger cg1.4xlarge version comes with 22 GB of memory, 1690 GB of local storage, 33.5 EC2 Compute Units and two NVIDIA Tesla “Fermi” M2050 GPUs.

Stream Computing ports GROMACS to OpenCL

GROMACS is a molecular simulation kit, which can do all kinds of "soft matter" simulations such as nanotubes, polymer chemistry, zeolites, adsorption studies, proteins, and more. It is being used by researches worldwide and is one of the bigger bio-informatics softwares around. Until now only CUDA was being used. To make it possible to use other accelerators, Stream Computing ported GROMACS to OpenCL. The folks at Stream Computing are looking for help on this project.

NVIDIA release NV_command_list

With the recent release of 347.88 drivers, NVIDIA adds official support for the NV_command_list extension. This extension has already been disclosed at last year’s SIGGRAPH ASIA and just days ago at the GPU Technology Conference 2015. The GTC presentation highlights the various benefits of the extension and the new possibilities it allows. Its primary goal is to allow current OpenGL applications to leverage the hardware to its full degree by providing the quickest possible path through the driver and benefit from future graphics API trends today. When adopting new concepts such as pipeline state objects and command buffers in current OpenGL applications, developers can also familiarize themselves with these modern software approaches and the implications and possibilities they have on their software architecture. However its feature set goes beyond what other graphics APIs are offering by enhancing the draw indirect mechanism with a flexible and extensible token-based command buffer approach. The spec can be found at the NVIDIA developer site and will be posted to the OpenGL registry soon. Sample code is provided.

Xiaomi Mi Pad Flipkart debuts with OpenGL 4.4, OpenGL ES 3.1 and tessellation

Xiaomi introduced its flagship tablet Mi Pad last week. Xiaomi Mi Pad houses the new generation Nvidia Tegra K1 processor. Inside, it packs ARM Cortex A15 quad-core chipset which can clock 2.2GHz CPU cycles and is backed by GeForce Kepler (192 cores) graphics engine. It is 1.5 times more energy efficient than other mobile GPUs and supports OpenGL 4.4, OpenGL ES 3.1 and tessellation, says the company. Mi Pad runs on the tweaked Android OS (4.4.4 KitKat) with MIUI v6.0. Unlike other UIs we see in Samsung, HTC, Sony and LG devices, Xiaomi's MIUI has a feature-rich interface and is refreshing. It is more like a hybrid between Android and iOS, yet simple and visually appealing.

NVIDIA Releases 350.12 Game Ready WHQL Drivers with OpenCL 1.2 Support

NVIDIA has released driver 350.12, which is both a Game Ready release and their first R349 WHQL release. NVIDIA has also posted a bit more information (PDF) on their OpenCL 1.2 driver. The OpenCL 1.2 drivers are based on the published Khronos Specification and are expected to pass the Khronos Conformance Testing. OpenCL 1.2 functionality will be available on Kepler and Maxwell GPUs.
