Codeplay has a very good write-up today on machine alternatives that don’t use Neural Networks. The included code, SYCL-ML was developed as a proof of concept to show what a machine learning application using heterogeneous computing can look like and has been published as an open source project. The project was developed using SYCL and ComputeCpp, which is an implementation of SYCL developed by Codeplay.
The Khronos Group announces the release of the Neural Network Exchange Format (NNEF™) 1.0 Provisional Specification for universal exchange of trained neural networks between training frameworks and inference engines. NNEF reduces machine learning deployment fragmentation by enabling a rich mix of neural network training tools and inference engines to be used by applications across a diverse range of devices and platforms. The release of NNEF 1.0 as a provisional specification enables feedback from the industry to be incorporated before the specification is finalized — comments and feedback are welcome on the NNEF GitHub repository.
Neil Trevett, Khronos Group President and Radhakrishna Giduthuri, Software Architecture and Compute Performance Acceleration at AMD, spoke at two Khronos related events this past week. Neils presented was an update on the Khronos Standards for Vision and Machine Learning which covered Khronos Standards OpenVX, NNEF, OpenCL, SYCL and Vulkan. Radhakrishna presented Standards for Neural Networks Acceleration and Deployment covered Khronos Standards OpenVX and NNEF. The slides from both presentations are now online.
There is a wide range of open-source deep learning training networks available today offering researchers and designers plenty of choice when they are setting up their project. Caffe, Tensorflow, Chainer, Theano, Caffe2, the list goes on and is getting longer all the time. This diversity is great for encouraging innovation, as the different approaches taken by the various frameworks make it possible to access a very wide range of capabilities, and, of course, to add functionality that’s then given back to the community. This helps to drive the virtuous cycle of innovation.
The Khronos Group is about to release a new standard method of moving trained neural networks among frameworks, and between frameworks and inference engines. The new standard is the Neural Network Exchange Format (NNEF™); it has been in design for over a year and will be available to the public by the end of 2017. The Khronos Group will be holding a two hour tutorial at the Embedded Systems Conference ‘17 in December. Attendees will gain an understanding of the architecture of Khronos standards for computer vision and neural networks; getting fluent in actually using OpenVX and NNEF for real-time computer vision and neural network inference tasks.
Khronos member AImotive discusses their vision-first technology and NNEF. AImotive worked with the Khronos Working Group to create the new Neural Networking Exchange Format standard. In conjunction with today’s PowerVR Series 9XE and Series 9XM announcement, Imagination is revealing a new series of PowerVR-branded hardware IP blocks: the Series 2NX neural network accelerator (NNA). AI tools face a similar fate, which is why the NNEF is designed to bring transparency and order. The involvement of the Khronos Group was essential to bringing key market players together and to lay down a globally applicable standard. Khronos is readying a standard interchange format to map training frameworks to inference engines. The Neural Network Exchange Format (NNEF) is an open, scalable transfer format that allows engineers to move trained networks from any framework that supports the cross-vendor format into any inference engine that can read it. It’s a sort of PDF for neural networks. Khronos is extending an invitation to data scientists and engineers to take part in an NNEF advisory panel, especially people working on non-standard and novel network inferencing architectures. Participation does not require a Khronos membership and will give interested companies and individuals an opportunity to contribute and provide feedback to this important work.
Don’t miss this year’s OpenVX Workshop at Embedded Vision Summit. Khronos will present a day-long hands-on workshop all about OpenVX cross-platform neural network acceleration API for embedded vision applications. We’ve developed a new curriculum so even if you attended in past years, this is a do-not-miss, jam-packed tutorial with new information on computer vision algorithms for feature tracking and neural networks mapped to the graph API. We’ll be doing a hands-on practice session that gives participants a chance to solve real computer vision problems using OpenVX with the folks who created the API. We’ll also be talking about the OpenVX roadmap and what’s to come.
FotoNation Limited and VeriSilicon Holdings Co., Ltd have entered into an agreement to jointly develop a next generation image processing platform that offers best-in-class programmability, power, performance and area for computer vision (CV), computational imaging (CI) and deep learning. The market-ready IP platform, named IPU 2.0, will be available for customer license and design in the first quarter of 2017. IPU 2.0 offers a unified programing environment and pre-integrated imaging features for a wide range of applications across surveillance, automotive, mobile, IoT and more. IPU 2.0 will use open initiatives such as OpenVX and OpenCL.
