Kathleen Maher from Graphic Speak interviewed Neil Trevett of Khronos about the difference between Open Standards and Open Source; how Khronos has perfected an efficient way of developing APIs and useful tools relatively fast; and Khronos’ new 3D Commerce Working Group.

Kathleen Maher from Jon Peddie Research writes “One of the most important technical advances to move technology forward is the development of WebGL, a variation on OpenGL that enables online code to take advantage of hardware processing. With the imminent arrival of WebGL 2.0 — expected by this summer — Peddie and Maher see benefits from hardware acceleration on the horizon.”

Imagination Technologies reports that over 100 products are now shipping using its POWERVR SGX graphics acceleration technology. This year will be the year in which OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics overtakes OpenGL ES 1.1 devices in terms of new deployments. Dr. Jon Peddie, president, Jon Peddie Research says “Simply put: Imagination’s POWERVR is the standard for mobile 3D graphics.”

The new iPhone 3G S uses an incompatible graphics library from the previous phones. The iPhone 3G uses the OpenGL ES 1.1 library while the 3G S uses the OpenGL ES 2.0, and the two are not compatible as OpenGL ES 2.0 is a superset of 1.1. This was a deliberate decision by Khronos, so that it could make some large performance improvements. One of the biggest features is the addition of pixel shaders, which gives considerable flexibility in making 3D content. Both Jonathan Hirshon and Jon Peddie weigh in on why this move probably won’t be a problem. Link to story in Japanese.
