New Dell Venue 8 tablet features a PowerVR Rogue GPU, runs OpenGL ES 3.0 and OpenCL out of the box

The refreshed Venue range of Android tablets from Dell is based on Intel Atom processors that run Android 4.4 KitKat. The Atom Z3460/Z3480 SoCs are 64-bit apps processors that include a dual-core CPU based on the Silvermont architecture and a quad-cluster PowerVR G6400 GPU capable of OpenGL ES 3.1, OpenCL 1.2 and RenderScript. In the past OpenCL had only been available on developer boards but the Venue 8 tablet is the first consumer device to come with both OpenCL and RenderScript working out of the box. We’ve loaded our OpenCL Camera Adjustment image processing demo to offer readers a quick comparison in performance. When running on our PowerVR G6400 GPU, the image processing demo averages around 74 fps while the Intel CPU peaks at 12 FPS. To put this into perspective, an Exynos-based Samsung Galaxy S4 using a PowerVR SGX544MP3 GPU was able to run the same demo at roughly 27 FPS.

Altera is demonstrating several advanced reconfigurable logic technologies at the Intel Developers Forum (IDF) 2014 that showcase how its FPGA-based solutions are advancing the capabilities of software-defined data centers and high-performance computing applications. The Financial Model Acceleration with FPGAs demonstration uses OpenCL to efficiently implement multiple kernels on an FPGA performing a Monte Carlo simulation to price options. Utilizing the OpenCL standard on a massively parallel FPGA architecture provides an effective solution for system acceleration, offering significantly higher performance at much lower power versus GPUs.

Intel provides new Integrated OpenCL development experience

OpenCL support at Intel is now going mainstream with a full integration into Intel’s portfolio of software development suites. The Intel SDK for OpenCL Applications features are now integrated into various development tools under the new name of OpenCL Code Builder. The different solutions are tailored to the target development environment: for mobile and PC development, the OpenCL Code Builder is now integrated into Intel Integrated Native Developer Experience (Intel INDE); For media server usages, the code builder is now integrated into Intel Media Server Studio. For other usages, a standalone Linux* version of the OpenCL Code Builder is also available. Two major new features are now supported: Commercial OpenCL Linux driver for Intel Processor Graphics is available with Intel Media Server Studio; OpenCL 2.0 support for 5th Generation Intel Core Processors with fine-grained SVM on Intel HD and Iris Graphics is available in Intel INDE.

Intel has updated its graphics drivers for users of 4th generation Core processors.
