Toronto ACM SIGGRAPH is presenting "High Performance Computing in Computer Graphics" on May 20th 2015 at the University of Toronto. Continuing with their recent focus on the technical side of computer graphics, the Toronto ACM SIGGRAPH Chapter is delighted to invite you to their next event, focused on high-performance computing (HPC). Presenting will be AJ Guillon, German Andryeyev, and Ned Nedialkov. AJ Guillon is a Khronos member and a contributor to OpenCL 2.1 and the OpenCL C++ kernel language. He has worked extensively with OpenCL since December 2008, when the first OpenCL 1.0 specification was released. AJ will talk about some of the details of the new OpenCL 2.1 provisional specification, including the new C++ kernel language, and discuss its benefits and pitfalls.
AMD unveiled their new AMD 7000 Series Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), AMD Radeon 300 and M300 Series Graphics, and AMD A-Series desktop APU updates. The AMD A-Series Desktop APUs offer Windows 10 readiness including DirectX 12 Multiengine and Multiadapter features. Combined with existing support for AMD FreeSync, AMD Mantle, HSA features heterogeneous queuing (hQ) and heterogeneous uniform memory access (hUMA) as enabled by OpenCL 2.0 applications, and OpenGL 4.4.
The new OpenCL Code Anlayzer, a feature of Intel INDE OpenCL Code Builder, adds performance analysis capabilities integrated in Microsoft Visual Studio OpenCL development environment. With this new feature the OpenCL Code Builder now supports each state of the OpenCL code development, enables developer to carry on performance optimizations in each step of the development from build, to debug, and to tuning and get the best out of Intel Graphics Compute capabilities. Red Hat's Christian Schaller posted a blog entry announcing their Khronos Membership. "The reason we are joining is because of all the important changes that are happening in Graphics and GPU compute these days and our wish to have more direct input of the direction of some of these technologies" wrote Christian.
The AMD exhibit showcases offer attendees a range of hands-on workflow experiences powered by AMD FirePro professional graphics: New fully integrated and redesigned OpenCL AMD accelerated features for Adobe Premiere Pro CC allow editors to be more creative with color than before. In addition to OpenCL streamlined color features, Adobe will showcase an all new OpenCL powered Morph Cut feature for making jump cuts natural and seamless; Autodesk demonstration featuring the FireRender plug-in for 3ds Max and Autodesk Maya with OpenCL accelerated Bullet Physics and deformers powered by a workstation with AMD FirePro W9100 professional graphics.
As more and more devices support the OpenGL ES 3.1 graphics feature set, there needs to be a benchmark to test these devices and see how well they do with OpenGL ES 3.1 games that take advantage of all the new features. The Khronos Group today announced the ratification and public release of the OpenCL 2.1 provisional specification. OpenCL 2.1 is a significant evolution of the open, royalty-free standard for heterogeneous parallel programming that defines a new kernel language based on a subset of C++ for significantly enhanced programmer productivity, and support for the new Khronos SPIR-V cross-API shader program intermediate language now used by both OpenCL and the new Vulkan graphics API.
In another significant announcement today, OpenCL 2.1 and Vulkan™, the new open standard API for high-efficiency access to graphics and compute on modern GPUs, are now sharing core intermediate language technologies resulting in SPIR-V; a revolution in the Khronos Standard Portable Intermediate Representation initially used by OpenCL™, now fully defined by Khronos with native support for shader and kernel features. SPIR-V splits the compiler chain, enabling high-level language front-ends to emit programs in a standardized intermediate form to be ingested by Vulkan or OpenCL drivers. Eliminating the need for a built-in high-level language source compiler significantly reduces driver complexity and will enable a diversity of language front-ends. Additionally, a standardized IR provides a measure of kernel IP protection, accelerated kernel load times and enables developers to use a common language front-end, improving kernel reliability and portability across multiple implementations. Imagination Technologies announces a new area-optimized PowerVR GPU designed to drive high-quality graphics with full OpenGL ES 3.0 functionality into low-cost and space-constrained devices. The new PowerVR G6020 GPU has been specially designed for graphics efficiency in ultra-compact silicon area, obtaining better real device performance and compatibility without unnecessary overhead. It is the smallest member of the PowerVR Series6XE family, with four arithmetic logic unit (ALU) cores and a silicon footprint of 2.2mm2 (28nm process technology at 400MHz).
The Khronos Group and ImmersiON-VRelia will be sponsoring the annual ITA meeting March 4 at 9AM, at SF Green Space @EEFG. Scheduled speakers include Neil Trevett, President of the Khronos Group and Dr. Jon Peddie of Jon Peddie Research, among others. Neil Trevett will talk about the litmus test for helping determine when the ideology of 'Open Standards' holds true, and how the alliance is working to honor this methodology in their working groups pertaining to standards and industry growth. Later the same day and in the same place, the Khronos Group will be holding an 'OpenCL Ecosystem Advances: OpenCL, SYCL, and SPIR' session and a WebGL Meetup. Although the WebGL meetup is now filled to capacity, there is still some room remaining for the OpenCL venture, and the two special sessions on March 5th for 'Next Generation of Graphics and Compute API'. All of these events are being held at SF Green Space @EEFG in San Francisco.
Intel has updated its graphics drivers for users of 4th generation Core processors. The headline benefits to updating your Haswell based system's drivers is that the integrated graphics component will give you up to 10 per cent better performance in games and up to 30 per cent better performance in OpenCL. This driver update may be particularly interesting to those with systems which rely upon Intel graphics and have no graphic card upgrade options - laptops and devices like the Surface Pro 3.
The Khronos Group will be holding a number of sessions off-site during GDC week. There will be two sessions dedicated to discussing the Next Generation of Graphics and Compute API, as well as an OpenCL and WebGL meetup. These sessions will be taking place at SF Green Space (EEFG) just a few minutes walking distance from the Moscone center on Wednesday and Thursday. OpenCL support at Intel is now going mainstream with a full integration into Intel’s portfolio of software development suites. The Intel SDK for OpenCL Applications features are now integrated into various development tools under the new name of OpenCL Code Builder. The different solutions are tailored to the target development environment: for mobile and PC development, the OpenCL Code Builder is now integrated into Intel Integrated Native Developer Experience (Intel INDE); For media server usages, the code builder is now integrated into Intel Media Server Studio. For other usages, a standalone Linux* version of the OpenCL Code Builder is also available. Two major new features are now supported: Commercial OpenCL Linux driver for Intel Processor Graphics is available with Intel Media Server Studio; OpenCL 2.0 support for 5th Generation Intel Core Processors with fine-grained SVM on Intel HD and Iris Graphics is available in Intel INDE.
The PowerVR Graphics SDK was previously only available through Imagination's PowerVR Insider website. You may now find the Native SDK (cross-platform OpenGL ES 1.x/2.0/3.x SDK), WebGL SDK and PVRMonitor (on-device hardware profiling tool for Android) on Github.
The Khronos Group will be at SIGGRAPH Asia this coming weekend. Neil Trevett, Khronos Group President and VP of Mobile Content at NVIDIA will be speaking. There will be a panel session "Next Frontiers For Interactive Applications" on Saturday followed by a tech-talk "What's Next In Graphics APIs?" on Saturday December 6th which will cover the rapidly changing landscape of acceleration APIs for mobile devices and the Next Generation OpenGL Initiative first revealed at SIGGRAPH 2014.
