Toronto ACM SIGGRAPH High Performance Computing in Computer Graphics May 20th

Toronto ACM SIGGRAPH is presenting "High Performance Computing in Computer Graphics" on May 20th 2015 at the University of Toronto. Continuing with their recent focus on the technical side of computer graphics, the Toronto ACM SIGGRAPH Chapter is delighted to invite you to their next event, focused on high-performance computing (HPC). Presenting will be AJ Guillon, German Andryeyev, and Ned Nedialkov. AJ Guillon is a Khronos member and a contributor to OpenCL 2.1 and the OpenCL C++ kernel language. He has worked extensively with OpenCL since December 2008, when the first OpenCL 1.0 specification was released. AJ will talk about some of the details of the new OpenCL 2.1 provisional specification, including the new C++ kernel language, and discuss its benefits and pitfalls.

AMD Unveils New 7000 Series APUs with OpenCL 2.0 and OpenGL 4.4 support

AMD unveiled their new AMD 7000 Series Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), AMD Radeon 300 and M300 Series Graphics, and AMD A-Series desktop APU updates. The AMD A-Series Desktop APUs offer Windows 10 readiness including DirectX 12 Multiengine and Multiadapter features. Combined with existing support for AMD FreeSync, AMD Mantle, HSA features heterogeneous queuing (hQ) and heterogeneous uniform memory access (hUMA) as enabled by OpenCL 2.0 applications, and OpenGL 4.4.

OpenCL Code Analyzer in Intel INDE Update 2

The new OpenCL Code Anlayzer, a feature of Intel INDE OpenCL Code Builder, adds performance analysis capabilities integrated in Microsoft Visual Studio OpenCL development environment. With this new feature the OpenCL Code Builder now supports each state of the OpenCL code development, enables developer to carry on performance optimizations in each step of the development from build, to debug, and to tuning and get the best out of Intel Graphics Compute capabilities. OpenCL Code Builder in conjunction with Intel INDE Platfrom Analyzer now enables tuning features for OpenCL applications like:

Red Hat joins The Khronos Group

Red Hat's Christian Schaller posted a blog entry announcing their Khronos Membership. "The reason we are joining is because of all the important changes that are happening in Graphics and GPU compute these days and our wish to have more direct input of the direction of some of these technologies" wrote Christian.

Khronos Reveals Vulkan API for High-efficiency Graphics and Compute on GPUs

The Khronos Group announced the availability of technical previews of the new Vulkan™ open standard API for high-efficiency access to graphics and compute on modern GPUs used in a wide variety of devices. This ground-up design, previously referred to as the Next Generation OpenGL Initiative, provides applications direct control over GPU acceleration for maximized performance and predictability, and uses Khronos’ new SPIR-V™ specification for shading language flexibility. Vulkan initial specifications and implementations are expected later this year and any company may participate in Vulkan’s ongoing development by joining Khronos.

Khronos Releases OpenCL 2.1 Provisional Specification for Public Review

The Khronos Group today announced the ratification and public release of the OpenCL 2.1 provisional specification. OpenCL 2.1 is a significant evolution of the open, royalty-free standard for heterogeneous parallel programming that defines a new kernel language based on a subset of C++ for significantly enhanced programmer productivity, and support for the new Khronos SPIR-V cross-API shader program intermediate language now used by both OpenCL and the new Vulkan graphics API.

Khronos Releases SPIR-V The first open standard intermediate language for parallel compute and graphics

In another significant announcement today, OpenCL 2.1 and Vulkan™, the new open standard API for high-efficiency access to graphics and compute on modern GPUs, are now sharing core intermediate language technologies resulting in SPIR-V; a revolution in the Khronos Standard Portable Intermediate Representation initially used by OpenCL™, now fully defined by Khronos with native support for shader and kernel features. SPIR-V splits the compiler chain, enabling high-level language front-ends to emit programs in a standardized intermediate form to be ingested by Vulkan or OpenCL drivers. Eliminating the need for a built-in high-level language source compiler significantly reduces driver complexity and will enable a diversity of language front-ends. Additionally, a standardized IR provides a measure of kernel IP protection, accelerated kernel load times and enables developers to use a common language front-end, improving kernel reliability and portability across multiple implementations.
