WebGL Meetup videos now online

Did you miss the WebGL Meetup we held along side GDC last week? No worries, we recorded the entire meetup, and have posted it in four parts on YouTube (part one, two, three) and as podcasts. With Tony Parisi as moderator, the WebGL meetup covered lots of ground, including a spec update, lots of demo's and a security corner with Ken Russell from Google. ImgTec distributing preview copies of Insider SDK 2.1 at GDC

Imagination Technologies has released version 2.10 of its industry leading PowerVR Insider SDK. The PowerVR Insider SDK fully supports the development of applications using the Khronos OpenGL® ES 1.1 and 2.0 APIs. Free and fully featured copies of the SDK will be available for download soon following a brief period where preview copies will be exclusively given away on DVD by Imagination at GDC 2012 in San Francisco.

Khronos Announces COLLADA Community Initiative

Today Khronos released an open letter to the COLLADA community inviting closer cooperation and communication with the COLLADA working group.

To start the discussion, Khronos are also hosting a COLLADA meetup to discuss proprieties and actions for the ingoing health of this important 3D Asset format - open to all:

Autodesk and Khronos.org were among the exhibitors competing for attention at GDC

GDC was a beehive of activity with companies madly competing for attention. The Khronos Group was no exception, as they had a large presence this year at GDC. GFXSpeak discusses the changing tide. "The mobile gaming market is growing fast, enabled by smart phones and devices that are getting smarter with every turn of the Moore’s Law crank. The new processors including Nvidia’s Tegra, the Imagination-fueled OMAP processors and Intel’s coming Medfield; Freescale, Marvell, and others all do 3D as a matter of course. AMD Showcases New Open Source Physics Plug-In for Autodesk Maya based on OpenCL and Bullet Physics

AMD announced at GDC 2011 a technology demonstration of a Bullet Physics plug-in for Autodesk® Maya® 2011 software. The new plug-in is based on OpenCL™ industry standards and the open-source Bullet Physics Engine. AMD's Bullet Physics plug-in for Autodesk Maya 2011 is designed to enable game developers and 3D artists to access Maya's creative workflow capabilities to create interactive cloth simulations on a greater range of workstations and PCs, including those based on ATI FirePro™ professional graphics cards and AMD CPUs, and to remove technology limitations that can restrict developers' ability to create stunning games and computer-generated (CG) graphics.

See Khronos and COLLADA at GDC

Please visit Khronos at booth #1444 at the Game Developer Conference (GDC), March 2-4, 2011 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco to learn more about COLLADA. Khronos is also running a series of developer university sessions on Thursday, March 3rd, in Room 301 in the South Hall:

  • WebGL at 9AM
  • OpenGL at 10:30AM
  • Demos at 12 noon
  • COLLADA at 1:30PM
  • OpenCL at 3PM
  • Beer and demos at 4:30PM and finally Mobile APIs at 4:50PM.

Opera brings the WebGL experience to Windows

• Tags:

Opera just announced that its latest Opera 11 beta has WebGL support for Windows. Currently only Windows is support, but a promise of WebGL on Opera for other platforms has been made. As well, Opera claims they are working on WebGL for Windows using DirectX. This should be interesting, as WebGL is built on top of OpenGL. Opera 11 for Windows is available for download today.

Joe Davis and Gordon MacLachlan both from Imagination Technologies, will present their session "Understanding POWERVR SGX Graphics Technology and Optimizing for Great Graphics Performance" on Monday february 28th at 4:15 Room 120 in the North Hall. The aim of this session is to give an expert insight into the POWERVR SGX and SGX MP Tile Based Deferred Rendering architecture and explain to developers how they can use the PVRTune analysis utility, and best programming practice, to optimize their applications for todays mobile devices.
