AEC Hackathon: An Industry First

The first Architecture, Engineering, Construction Hackathon. The AEC Hackathon is using open source and open standard technologies to develop the AEC Hackathon’s software solutions--cloud-based solutions are encouraged. Some data sets and API’s (REST, REST3D, etc.) will be distributed before the event for all registered attendees. Technologies being encouraged include 3D Gaming, BIM, XML, iOS, Android, HTML5/javascript among others. Video rate computational photography now running at Full HD resolution using OpenCL

Imagination Technologies has implemented a set of image and video handling extensions to the EGL Native Platform Interface to enable developers to create high-performance GPU compute applications on the new low-cost Hardkernel ODROID-XU development system. The new OpenCL API extensions enable developers to implement Instagram-like functionality on real-time camera data, including computational photography and video processing, while offloading the main CPU by providing resource sharing and interoperability between the camera pipeline, OpenGL ES graphics and OpenCL compute APIs. Imagination will be releasing the PowerVR GPU compute SDK and programming guidelines for PowerVR Series5XT GPUs and there is an upcoming release of the popular PowerVR Graphics SDK v3.2 featuring OpenCL support in PVRTrace for PowerVR Series6 GPUs.

EGL Working Group Requests Feedback on Change in Attribute List Type

The Khronos EGL Working Group is requesting feedback on a change to the definition of EGLint that would disallow using handles as attribute values. If you have feedback on this change, please post it in the discussion boards where the proposed change is described in more detail.

Khronos Group at Chinese Ministry of Education’s (MOE) faculty training seminar

The Khronos Group was in China visiting Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen during the week of Oct.14th - 19th, 2013. Erik Noreke, Khronos VP of Business Development was the keynote speaker at the Chinese Ministry of Education's (MOE) faculty training seminar on Oct.14th at Tsinghua University. More than 200 professors from cities all over China participated in this certified training program to learn more about the Khronos Group and their APIs.

Khronos Releases OpenVX 1.0 Specification for Computer Vision Acceleration

The Khronos Group today announced the ratification and public release of the OpenVX 1.0 provisional specification, an open, royalty-free standard for cross platform acceleration of computer vision applications and libraries. OpenVX enables performance and power optimized computer vision algorithms for use cases such as face, body and gesture tracking, smart video surveillance, automatic driver assistance systems, object and scene reconstruction, augmented reality, visual inspection, robotics and more. The provisional release of the specification enables developers and implementers to provide feedback before specification finalization, which is expected within six months. The OpenVX 1.0 Provisional Specification Press Release is available on the Khronos Group website and the official feedback thread is available on the Khronos forums.

Introducing the PowerVR Series2 ‘Raptor’ ISP architecture for OpenVX-enabled systems

Imagination Technologies has announced a new camera Image Signal Processing (ISP) architecture codenamed ‘Raptor.’ Imagination designed the PowerVR Series2 ‘Raptor’ imaging pipeline architecture from the ground-up to be optimized for integration into next-generation System-on-Chips (SoCs) for a broad range of imaging and vision applications. ‘Raptor’ is also the first ISP designed to operate as a cooperative part of a heterogeneous computing platform for advanced functions and next-generation applications that will be compatible with OpenVX and other APIs used for computer vision.

Hands On OpenCL is a two-day lecture course introducing OpenCL, the API for writing heterogeneous applications. Provided are slides for around twelve lectures, plus some appendicies, complete with Examples and Solutions in C, C++ and Python. The lecture series finishes with information on porting CUDA applications to OpenCL.

Khronos discloses the high-level direction for a new version of the OpenGL ES standard for mobile and embedded 3D graphics - to enable roadmap planning by OEMs and developers that are not Khronos members. Details around 'OpenGL ES Next' include:

  • The OpenGL ES Working Group plans to release a new version of OpenGL ES in 2014
  • The main features of the new API will be:
    • Backward compatibility with OpenGL ES 2.0 and 3.0
    • Compute shaders, with atomics and image load/store capability
    • Separate shader objects
    • Indirect draw commands
    • Enhanced texturing functionality including texture gather, multisample textures and stencil textures
    • Enhanced shading language functionality
  • For clarification purposes the new API will not include:
    • Tessellation and geometry shaders
