The Khronos Group is preparing for the Game Developers Conference 2010. On the Official Khronos GDC Event page, a few of the sessions and speakers have been listed, as well as information regarding the Khronos Group's booth. Session this year will cover OpenCL, OpenGL, OpenGL ES, WebGL and COLLADA. This year there will be two additional sessions, "The Best of Both Worlds: Using UIKit with OpenGL" by Noel Llopis from Snappy Touch, and "An Overview to Creating Games with Palm's Plug-in Development Kit" by Jeff Bush, Director webOS, Graphics & Gaming at Palm.

Rightware's Kanzi SDK offers the missing link to chain today’s mainstream 3D graphics content creation tools, such as 3DS Max, Maya and XSI with cell phones and other mobile devices. Artists will be able to export their UI base designs from the software packages to Kanzi SDK using COLLADA data format. Kanzi also sports a unified pipeline for OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenGL ES 1.x based 3D graphics, with the engine able to run real-time streaming data, texture and fragment shaders, as well as multi-texturing and dynamic lighting.

Texas Instruments debuts first two devices from its new Sitara family, the AM3505 and AM3517 ARM microprocessors (MPU), and an AM3517 evaluation module. TI's high-performance ARM MPUs are the first Cortex-A8 processor-based solutions optimized for industrial applications. AM3517 key features builds on the AM3505 with an additional PowerVR(TM) SGX graphics engine to accelerate 3D graphical user interfaces. The graphics engine can process up to 10 Mpolygons/sec and supports OPENGL® ES 2.0.

The Khronos Group announced it has publicly released the OpenMAX™ AL 1.0 specification, a royalty-free, cross-platform C-language API for high-performance multimedia applications on mobile and embedded devices. The OpenMAX AL standard simplifies deployment of hardware and software audio, video and imaging capabilities across any platform or operating system. OpenMAX AL enables developers to create rich media applications across a wide range of hardware devices.

The upcoming Palm Pixi will have the new MSM7627 chipset from Qualcomm giving close to the same performance as the Pre. Featuring two ARM cores integrated as a single chip – a dedicated CPU core and a dedicated modem processor – 320MHz application DSP for multimedia supporting full 30 fps WVGA encode/decode, 200MHz hardware-accelerated 3D graphics core supporting OpenGL ES 2.0, high-resolution camera and integrated GPS.

gles2-bc is an open source C++ library which makes the non-backward compatible OpenGL ES 2.0 API backward compatible to ease the development with various OpenGL ES APIs. The initial version was just released providing most of the backward compatibility.

Intel Corporation and Nokia announced a long-term relationship to develop a new class of Intel® Architecture-based mobile computing device and chipset architectures. It will combine the performance of powerful computers with high-bandwidth mobile broadband communications and ubiquitous Internet connectivity. Intel will also acquire a Nokia HSPA/3G modem IP license for use in future products.

The presentations from the Austin Khronos Mobile Gaming Forum are now online. Presentations cover OpenGL ES 1.1 hardware acceleration porting and optimizations, the structure of OpenVG and a brief introduction to the new embedded audio API, OpenSL ES. The Khronos Overview (4.4 MB pdf) is a fast way to understand the Khronos platform for embedded media, from APIs to authoring tools.
