The Khronos Group is preparing for the Game Developers Conference 2010. On the Official Khronos GDC Event page, a few of the sessions and speakers have been listed, as well as information regarding the Khronos Group's booth. Session this year will cover OpenCL, OpenGL, OpenGL ES, WebGL and COLLADA. This year there will be two additional sessions, "The Best of Both Worlds: Using UIKit with OpenGL" by Noel Llopis from Snappy Touch, and "An Overview to Creating Games with Palm's Plug-in Development Kit" by Jeff Bush, Director webOS, Graphics & Gaming at Palm.

C3DL website has an announcement stating they have released v2.0 of C3DL. The version 2.0 core has been updated to use WebGL. The demo's, tutorials and documentation have been updated also. From the website, "The Canvas 3D JS Libary (C3DL) is a JavaScript library that will make it easier to write 3D applications using WebGL." This version sees ports of all c3dl features including COLLADA model loading, Picking, Lighting System, Camera system, Particle system and Effects System.

CopperLicht, a fast JavaScript 3D engine has been released today in its first public version. It uses WebGL and is able to render huge 3d worlds like Quake 3 levels (see the demos) at playable speeds. It comes with a full 3d world editor to edit levels and maps and is free to be used. Via it's world editor, CopperLicht is able to import more than 20 3D file formats (like .3ds, .obj, .x, .lwo, COLLADA etc), so it is very easy to create content using this 3d engine. This is the first public release of CopperLicht, so Ambiera, the developer behind this 3d engine is happy about any suggestions, feature requests and comments.

Rightware's Kanzi SDK offers the missing link to chain today’s mainstream 3D graphics content creation tools, such as 3DS Max, Maya and XSI with cell phones and other mobile devices. Artists will be able to export their UI base designs from the software packages to Kanzi SDK using COLLADA data format. Kanzi also sports a unified pipeline for OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenGL ES 1.x based 3D graphics, with the engine able to run real-time streaming data, texture and fragment shaders, as well as multi-texturing and dynamic lighting.

The latest version of the OpenCTM 3D mesh viewer (part of the OpenCTM v1.0.2 SDK) has support for loading, viewing and saving several different file formats (OpenCTM, COLLADA, STL, PLY, OBJ and 3DS), making it a convenient companion tool for 3D graphics developers and artists. The viewer uses OpenGL for its 3D view and GUI, and works under Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, etc. OpenCTM is a file format, software library and a tool set for compression of triangle meshes. It fits well with the current OpenGL rendering pipeline, with support for custom shader attributes among other things.

Being able to export your Spore Creatures into .dae COLLADA format was a pretty cool trick. However, you could only preview your creatures as 2D images in your browser. Over the weekend, Mozilla was hard at work, fixing a few bugs in their implementation of WebGL. Over the weekend Vladimir Vukićevićwas was also busy putting together a very cool demo that will let you view your COLLADA exported Spore Creatures in 3D, right in your browser. As the 3D wars heat up, many folks see COLLADA's .dae format as a front runner for Digital Content Creation (DCC). In the Engineering CAD field the STandard for the Exchange of Product model data (STEP) has been declared as a clear winner by some. This article is an attempt to start a conversation on whether or not the COLLADA format is the next 'STEP' for the DCC industry.
