Open Asset Import Library (Assimp) release 1.1 is out. It features many bugfixes, improvements and new file formats as well (i.e. Milkshape 3D) and now supports more than 25 3D file formats out of the box, including COLLADA, Obj, 3DS and LightWave formats. COLLADA support has been vastly improved and most DCC applications play well with Assimp's COLLADA Loader. Assimp is an Open Source library (BSD-style license) written in C++.

Immaginaria Ltd is proud to announce a major update to TNGViewer, featuring support for the Open Asset Import Library, which provides access to several different 3D file formats. These include modo .lxo, DirectX .x, Stanford Polygon Library .ply, Stereolithography .stl, Object File Format .off and many more. importing COLLADA .dae files is also much improved; previously supported types such as 3D Studio .3ds, Alias|Wavefront .obj and so on are imported better as well. File formats that contain keyframe and skinning animation use dynamic OpenGL VBOs for performance. Furthermore, a fallback Direct3D 9 renderer is available on Windows, on any machine without decent OpenGL drivers. Finally, several interface and display issues have been fixed on Windows and Mac OS X.

Vue 8 Frontier is designed for 3D enthusiasts to easily compose character-filled images and video clips. It provides powerful nature creation tools, together with built in Poser and DAZ 3D character rendering. Based on the Vue 8 core application, Vue 8 Frontier will import any static Poser or DAZ 3D model exported through DAZ|Studio as COLLADA files.

Using COLLADA with DAZ Studio and Carrara? Find out quickly which features of COLLADA are compatible between DAZ Studio and Carrara. The DAZ3D Artzone has a concise list online for reference.

EskoArtwork's ArtiosCAD 7.6, the most recent release of this CAD package, has added the ability to import COLLADA models directly into your workspace. ArtiosCAD is structural design software for all corrugated, folding cartons and POP displays.

A powerful Mac based 3D design suite offering streamline compatibility with Adobe Photoshop. Offering an intuitive interface, Strata Design 3D CX offers a number of import options in addition to COLLADA: OBJ, 3DS, DXF, IGES, OpenEXR, and others.

IMS Design released TurboCAD Pro 17 offering improved speed. Significant improvements in interoperability with Google™ SketchUp™ workflow have been introduced via an improved COLLADA (.DAE) export feature which includes instances so that blocks and architectural objects will be read by SketchUp as components.

We invite you to submit a proposal for an innovative article to be included in a forthcoming book, Game Development Tools, which will be edited by Marwan Y. Ansari and published by A. K. Peters. We expect to publish the volume in time for GDC 2011. We are open to any tools articles that you feel would make a valuable contribution to this book. Some topics that would be of interest include:

  • Content Pipeline tools (creation, streamlining, management)
  • Graphics/Rendering tools
  • Profiling tools
  • COLLADA import/export/inspection
  • Sound tools
  • In-Game debugging tools
  • Memory management & analysis
  • Console tools (single and cross platform)

This list is not meant to be exclusive and other topics are welcome.

COLLADA import/export in DAZ 3D offers a step towards full interoperability between Carrara and DAZ Studio. Now you can export figures, conforming clothing, morphs and scenes from DAZ Studio into Carrara. A key new ingredient to this cross-functionality is support for "sparse morph" data. This allows you to transfer large amounts of morph data within smaller files for greater speed. DAZ 3D pioneered this technology for the COLLADA file format and DAZ Studio is the first application to use this new technique. Dynamic clothing can also now be exported as part of a COLLADA file using the new "Freeze Simulation" feature. Available as part of the Dynamic Clothing plugin, Freeze Simulation is used to convert dynamic clothing simulations into static morph data. The same data can then be imported into your Carrara scenes.

The Khronos Group announced that the COLLADA™ 1.4 Adopters Package is complete and under final review prior to public release--anticipated for April, 2010. The Adopters Package contains both conformance testing software and documentation intended to drive rapid evaluation, deployment and acceptance of the COLLADA specification in 3D content creation, and asset management software. Three new levels of COLLADA compliance are offered in the Adopters Package, which is available to any interested company by executing the Khronos COLLADA 1.4 Adopters Agreement. You can learn more about COLLADA at the Game Developer Conference Friday, March 12 from1:30pm to 2:30pm. The official press release is available here, and an official feedback thread has been started on the COLLADA.org forums.

Autodesk® Softimage® 2011 introduces innovative new rendering and animation tools that help artists create more complex, high quality characters and effects in less time. Included in the new features is Crosswalk 5.0, which will allow you to transfer Softimage content in and out of Autodesk 3ds Max® and Autodesk Maya® software pipelines using the latest dotXSI, COLLADA, and FBX standards.

COLLADA will be sponsoring a session at GDC on Friday March 12th 2010. Attend the COLLADA session to discover how COLLADA assets and tool chains fit naturally with WebGL’s acceleration of 3D on the web - and how the combination of COLLADA and WebGL provide a compelling 3D pipeline for 3D Web content creation and deployment.
