Users of COLLADA and the file format .dae will be please to see that Preview, OS X's lightway graphic viewer application, will display .dae files with OpenGL-powered 3D graphics. Bitmanagement announced the latest release of their 3D content viewer BS Contact 7.2 Web 3D. The 3D content viewer now supports all major browsers, IE, Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome and Opera. The 3D internet software implements both the ISO standard definitions X3D and VRML as well as the industry standard COLLADA.

TAKUMI Corporation announced that the company has started licensing GV500 and GV300, TAKUMI’s new graphics accelerator IP core supporting 2D Vector Graphics for use mainly in mobile phones and digital consumer electronics products. Both IP cores support the API standards for embedded systems: GV500 supports both OpenGL ES1.1 and OpenVG1.1 while GV300 supports OpenVG1.1.

Futuremark's OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics benchmarking software has been upgraded to support new UI technologies for mobile devices. The enhanced version of 3DMarkMobile ES 2.0 adds two new tests focused on new UI scenarios. The software which is based on the "Kanzi" 3D engine, is designed to test next-generation mobile 3D hardware, and is equipped with "high detail game content." The benchmark generates workloads that push the envelope of OpenGL ES 2.0 3D hardware, with a presentation that can be used for product demonstrations, the company adds.

Google released an experimental browser plugin which lets you display rich 3D graphics in Web content. Google hopes this plugin will contribute to the new 3D Web work group managed by the Khronos Group and backed by Mozilla and Google itself. With Google's contribution and participation in this effort to build 3D Web standards it looks like this concept is gaining traction. There has been some confusion over Google releasing this API and whether it is meant to derail the efforts of Khronos and Mozilla. On the contrary, from Google's own blog, "Google plans to contribute technology and web development expertise to the discussion within Khronos and the broader development community."

The annual Web3D Symposium is a major event, which unites researchers, developers, experimenters, and content creators in a dynamic learning environment. Attendees share and explore methods of using, enhancing, or creating new 3D Web and Multimedia technologies, such as (but not limited to) X3D, VRML, COLLADA, Croquet, MPEG4, MPEG7, Java3D, and Canvas3D. The symposium will also focus on recent trends such as interactive 3D graphics and applications on mobile devices.
