COLLADA and X3D seek CAD/GIS Standards

COLLADA, originally a gaming-industry-motivated intermediary pipeline format, and perhaps because of its use of XML, COLLADA is extensible to other enterprises requiring 3-D graphics. Today, many users are looking to integrate CAD and GIS using COLLADA—Google Earth’s COLLADA models being the most common example. COLLADA and X3D, while originally solving the 3-D tool-chain and Web-visualization problems of slightly different markets, are now working toward an open CAD solution expected to be used by the GIS industry, among others. It’s anticipated that COLLADA and X3D will provide significant long-term value to content and application developers worldwide.
