The upcoming Palm Pixi will have the new MSM7627 chipset from Qualcomm giving close to the same performance as the Pre. Featuring two ARM cores integrated as a single chip – a dedicated CPU core and a dedicated modem processor – 320MHz application DSP for multimedia supporting full 30 fps WVGA encode/decode, 200MHz hardware-accelerated 3D graphics core supporting OpenGL ES 2.0, high-resolution camera and integrated GPS.

As reported by The Khronos Group, Spore now provides a cheat that allows Creators export their models in COLLADA file format. NaviCAD accurately displays the mesh and texture-mapping elements of the Spore COLLADA files. The NaviCAD developers are working on an update to handle all the COLLADA elements generated by the Spore COLLADA export cheat and have posted a slightly-modified Spore creature Hyla-Test in the Sample Models Search section of the app. NaviCAD is the only iPhone application that allows users to view COLLADA files including models from the Google 3D Warehouse.
The Khronos Group will be attending Siggraph again this year, and have announced 3 BOF's. This year Khronos will be hosting another OpenGL BOF, an OpenCL and a COLLADA BOF. Complete details are on Khronos' Siggraph events page. Although the discount registration period is over, Siggraph is offering to those who are unemployed, a special discount in order to help offset the current economic conditions. Complete details are on this page. The Khronos Group looks forward to seeing all of you this year at Siggraph.
Samsung licensed ARM's Mali-SVG-t technology for use in its mobile handsets. The Mali-SVG-t software offers an enhanced user experience, helping with 2D object tasks and provides a middleware layer compliant with the SVG-t 1.2 specification optimized for ARM processors.
Intel Corporation and Nokia announced a long-term relationship to develop a new class of Intel® Architecture-based mobile computing device and chipset architectures. It will combine the performance of powerful computers with high-bandwidth mobile broadband communications and ubiquitous Internet connectivity. Intel will also acquire a Nokia HSPA/3G modem IP license for use in future products.
The sample code from the OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide has been ported to run on the iPhone 3G S. There is also a new free e-Chapter on developing with OpenGL ES 2.0 for the iPhone 3G S. Both are available for download from the book website.
The new iPhone 3G S uses an incompatible graphics library from the previous phones. The iPhone 3G uses the OpenGL ES 1.1 library while the 3G S uses the OpenGL ES 2.0, and the two are not compatible as OpenGL ES 2.0 is a superset of 1.1. This was a deliberate decision by Khronos, so that it could make some large performance improvements. One of the biggest features is the addition of pixel shaders, which gives considerable flexibility in making 3D content. Both Jonathan Hirshon and Jon Peddie weigh in on why this move probably won't be a problem. Link to story in Japanese.
