CopperCube, the game engine focussing on WebGL has just been released in version 5. It now includes terrain support, video playback, network communication, iOS 8 WebGL support, shader programming, animation blending, and much more. There are also two new WebGL demos available on its website, showing it in action. A list of the new features with images is available as well.

NVIDIA has co-sponsored the WebGL Widget contest by contributing a new Shield Gaming Tablet as one of the prizes. This is in addition to two WebGL books Toni Parisi by sponsored by O’Reilly media; and the WebGL book by Sumeet Arora sponsored by Packt Publishing. Submit your best WebGL Widget by November 25 for a chance to win! We’ve recently increased the size limit from 30K to 200K. What can you create?

Interested in mobile technologies? Come to Mobilization 2014 on 18 October in Lodz, Poland for talks about the latest trends and happenings in mobilization. Especially catch the talk about the newest features in OpenGL ES 3.1, given by Dominik Witczak of Mobica (presented in Polish).

Luxoft announced the creation of its Professional VP9 Codec Software Development Kit (SDK). Luxoft’s codec is designed to help video content providers, cloud servers, and live-streaming companies produce effective, real-time 4K/UltraHD encoding and video streaming. As a result of utilizing the OpenCL standard, the SDK also offers a significant time-to-market advantage for todays hardware architectures such including CPUs, GPUs, and heterogeneous computing systems. VP9 4K SDK is ready for beta evaluation.

The WebGL Workshop London Meetup Group will be holding another WebGL meet-up in London on September 25th 2014.This month they’ll take a look at using fonts (and possibly models) in raw WebGL, Three.js, Babylon.js and (hopefully) PlayCanvas. Autodesk will also give a brief presentation of their online model viewer. Held at the SkillsMatter on Goswell Road London, there are a few prerequisites. Check it out, and if you can make it, please be sure to reserve your spot.

Intel released the first OpenCL 2.0 conformant platform with Intel Core M processors, supported with the new release (R2) of Intel’s SDK for OpenCL. The SDK works with current Intel processors and allows visual computing applications to take advantage of OpenCL 2.0’s new features on Intel Core M and future processors with Intel Processor Graphics. This major advance in graphics programmability and accessibility will help developers make greater use of the graphics engine to deliver new experiences on Intel-based platforms. The SDK provides everything you need to build, debug, and analyze OpenCL applications. Start now and write your first OpenCL 2.0 code on your current development platform, simply by using the new OpenCL 2.0 development environment that is installed with the SDK.

Altera is demonstrating several advanced reconfigurable logic technologies at the Intel Developers Forum (IDF) 2014 that showcase how its FPGA-based solutions are advancing the capabilities of software-defined data centers and high-performance computing applications. The Financial Model Acceleration with FPGAs demonstration uses OpenCL to efficiently implement multiple kernels on an FPGA performing a Monte Carlo simulation to price options. Utilizing the OpenCL standard on a massively parallel FPGA architecture provides an effective solution for system acceleration, offering significantly higher performance at much lower power versus GPUs.

Calling all WebGL developers: It’s time to put on your WebGL design hat again – announcing the launch of the second WebGL Widget Contest. Who will win? Whoever submits the coolest-looking widget! The winning entry will be posted on the Khronos website with a link back to the developer’s site, and the winner will receive three WebGL books. You can do so much with WebGL… show us your stuff! Learn more about the contest and upload your entries. The contest ends on November 25, the winner will be notified and publicly announced on December 2 (in time for SIGGRAPH Asia).

WebGL Paris is an open free event targeting developers, researchers, artists or students interested directly or indirectly to the WebGL technology. It is French spoken and framework agnostic. Long and short WebGL lectures and workshops will take place throughout the afternoon and evening. Registration to the event is available on the event website.
