It was very insightful of you guys to include up_axis information in Collada's design. I think a lot of formats don't include it.

I just want to be sure to make people aware of both up_axis implementation strategies.

Yep, one of the reasons it is the way it is was to support both strategies while limiting the more arbitrary use-cases that gamers don't experience (although other domains do).

Can someone point me to the definition of the following terms used in up_axis?

    1. upward
    2. to the right
    3. inward
    4. In Axis

    Re: Coordinate System clarification

See page 58 (<asset> element section 5-1 of the COLLADA 1.5 specification:

    Up Axis Values

The <up_axis> elementís values have the following meanings:
    Code :
Value Right Axis Up Axis In Axis
    X-UP Negative y Positive x Positive z
    Y_UP Positive x Positive y Positive z
    Z_UP Positive x Positive z Negative y

Where "In axis" is the direction looking into the scene frustum (near clip) and off into the distant (far clip).
