show/hide abstract[email protected] is an event series founded in 2021 to advocate for cooperation on developing interoperability standards between XR Platforms. Using portals as a point of consensus, this initiative gathered industry leaders to make statements in support of tech companies working together to accelerate building what Neil Trevett famously called the “Constellation of Standards that are needed to achieve the Metaverse”. Later, Neil credited the [email protected] series as having been “instrumental” in the founding of the Metaverse Standards Forum by demonstrating the will to build the foundation of the Metaverse with open interoperable standards. Now, “Portal Crawls” have been set up to lead groups to traverse these worlds. At AWE, MSF will host a reunion of the founding fellows of [email protected] to give an update on the state of portals. Terry xR Schussler, Evo Heyning and Ben Erwin will present the findings from the recent Portal Crawls and identify the gaps that remain to transform the Metaverse from a series of “walled gardens” into an immersive digital commons.

Physically-Based Rendering: A Standardized Approach to Materials in the Metaverse

Time: May 31st at 14:55 - 15:50 | Download Calendar
Location: Grand Ballroom D
Moderator: Leonard Daly, Daily Realism
Panelists:

  • Sandra Voelker, Independent Consultant
  • Ashleigh Miller, Senior 3D Program Manager at Amazon
  • Emmett Lalish, Senior Software Engineer at Google
show/hide abstract Realistic-looking materials are essential to creating virtual worlds that are tactile and inviting. Creating believable materials for 3D objects is a complex problem with several approaches, many of which are either prohibitively difficult to master or unsuited for transmission over the web. Over the past decade, however, Physically Based Rendering (PBR) has emerged as an artist-friendly, intuitive, expressive, and robust technique for adding material attributes to 3D objects.

As part of its stewardship of the glTF standard, the file format known as the “JPEG of 3D,” The Khronos Group has created formal specification extensions for a variety of PBR materials. In this session, members of the 3D formats working group will present the latest waves of PBR extensions, explaining what they can achieve and best practices for using them to create 3D assets. They will also discuss how to test for model performance consistency across 3D viewers. (AWE Link)

Building Open Standards for the Metaverse: Challenges and Progress

Time: June 1st at 13:00 - 13:55 | Download Calendar
Location: Grand Ballroom D
Moderator: Anshel Sag, Moor Insights & Strategy
Panelists:

  • Neil Trevett, Presdient of the Khronos Group & Chair of the Metaverse Standards Forum
  • Kavya Pearlman, CEO & Founder of XRSI
  • Elizabeth Rothman, Advisor and IP Attorney
show/hide abstract

At last year’s AWE, leaders of key standards development organizations (SDOs) and industry consortia including the Khronos Group, W3C, OpenAR Cloud, and ASWF discussed the need for more cross-organization collaboration to pave the way for an open, inclusive metaverse. It wasn’t just talk: these organizations have now come together along with hundreds of other SDOs, companies, and academic institutions to form the Metaverse Standards Forum, a venue for cooperation among metaverse stakeholders to foster the development of interoperability standards. The Forum has begun engaging in pragmatic, short-term projects like building a standards registar, coordinating use cases and requirements for input into SDOs, and creating interoperability prototypes, with more to come.

In this panel, leaders of Metaverse Standards Forum member organizations will discuss the interoperability challenges the group is prioritizing today, and how the forum is working to accelerate solutions. Attendees will gain insight into the nuances of topics including 3D asset interoperability; digital fashion; real/virtual world integration; and privacy, cybersecurity, and identity. The panel will explore current possibilities, challenges, and limitations within these domains, and discuss how attendees can contribute to the formation of an open metaverse. (AWE Link)

Beyond the Obvious: Unearthing Hidden Values in Digital Twins

Location: Grand Ballroom B
Speakers:

  • Cynthia Maller, Head of 3D Creative Technology at Walmart
  • Ashley Crowder, CEO & Co-Founder of VNTANA
show/hide abstract

Digital twins are virtual models of real world objects, and can be used a variety of fairly well-known ways, from product design to sales and marketing. But the digital twin has even more talents at many points along the consumer journey. The development of immersive commerce has forever changed the definition of “attribution model,” and the digital twin is a powerhouse within it. 3D experts Cynthia Maller from Walmart and Ashley Crowder from VNTANA will highlight some of the new and positive ways in which digital twins can be given credit in the enterprise arena. Leveling Up 3D E-Commerce

Time: June 1st at 14:30 - 15:25 | Download Calendar
Location: Grand Ballroom B
Moderator: Mike Festa, SuperDNA
Panelists:

  • Daniel Frith, Vice President of 3D at Avataar
  • Amra Tareen, CEO & Co-Founder of ALL3D
  • Ashley Crowder, CEO & Co-Founder of VNTANA
show/hide abstract 3D digital product representations are an incredibly powerful e-commerce sales tool. Ideally, retailers want to be able to use the same 3D assets in any context, from websites to native apps; our own e-commerce sites to third-party sellers; and interactive signs in brick-and-mortar stores to virtual store shelves in the metaverse. The open glTF standard, the “JPEG of 3D,” was built to meet the need for interoperability, and it is evolving to address the next generation of e-commerce use cases.

In this session, members of the asset creation and retail communities will discuss the gaps between the built-in capabilities and attributes of the most common 3D asset format, and current and emerging e-commerce requirements. We’ll examine use cases and discuss the challenges of current approaches. Finally, we’ll explore new extensions under development for glTF, including interactivity, behaviors, and the ability to assemble multiple assets into a single scene. Our panelists will share demonstrations of the kinds of experiences retailers will soon be able to offer cross-platform. You’ll leave inspired, with new ideas for your e-commerce platform and strategies to implement them using cost-efficient, interoperable standards-based assets. (AWE Link)
