Web3D has made a call for papers for the Web3D 2008 International Symposium at SIGGRAPH 2008 in Los Angeles, California. The Web3d Symposium will address a wide range of topics on creating and using new 3D Web and Multimedia technologies like X3D, VRML, COLLADA, Croquet, MPEG4, MPEG7, Java3D, and Canvas3D. Authors are invited to submit their research and applications papers be they short or full papers for review by the international Program Committee. The papers must be innovative and contribute to the advancement of 3D Multimedia technologies on the Web.

Siggraph 2009 in New Orleans is fast approaching, and Khronos has started to update its events page. Just added are the date and time for the OpenGL Birds of a Feather (BoF) get-together at Siggraph 2009. Be sure to mark on your calendar Wednesday, August 5th 2009, between 4pm and 6pm in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Room 264.

The Khronos Group will be attending Siggraph again this year, and have announced 3 BOF's. This year Khronos will be hosting another OpenGL BOF, an OpenCL and a COLLADA BOF. Although the discount registration period is over, Siggraph is offering to those who are unemployed, a special discount in order to help offset the current economic conditions. The Khronos Group has posted the outline for all three of their BOFs. Representatives from AMD, Intel and NVIDIA will be presenting at the OpenCL BOF. COLLADA has a large line-up of presenters covering many topics. The OpenGL BOF will have OpenGL news from Barthold Lichtenbelt, ARB / NVIDIA, a presenter from Mozilla will talk about '3D on the Web, OpenGL ES in JavaScript', as well as an Open GL ES update and much more. The Champion the 3D Web using COLLADA Contest is quickly coming to end. With only three days left until it closing July 31st at midnight. If you are interested in entering, you should do so now. The Khronos Group has posted the BOF schedules for Siggraph 2009, which includes the time and date for announcing the winner. In addition to a Grand Prize of $5000, there are also First place, Second place and runner up prizes which include cash and additional prizes from the Media Grid Immersive Education Initiative and Electric Rain Inc. Khronos has posted the Siggraph 2009 COLLADA BOF presentation slides and the OpenGL BOF presentation slides. The OpenGL BOF slides include an overview on OpenGL 3.2, OpenGL ES, WebGL, GLSL and gDEBugger. The COLLADA slides include a COLLADA Conformance overview, COLLADA Vision, Project Wonderland, Sirikata--a next generation open source virtual world--and the COLLADA Contest Winners.

If you missed the "Beyond Programmable Shading" courses at Siggraph 2009, or you missed Siggraph 2009 altogether, no worries: the course notes and PDF slide presentations are now available online compliments of the Institute for Data Analysis and Visualization at UCDavis University of California. Aaron Lefohn from Intel and Mike Houston from AMD organized these courses which included experts on advanced rendering, graphics hardware, and parallel computing for graphics. Panelists from the Q&A were from DICE, Epic Games, Stanford Univeristy, Chalmers University and MIT.
