Autodesk and Khronos.org were among the exhibitors competing for attention at GDC

GDC was a beehive of activity with companies madly competing for attention. The Khronos Group was no exception, as they had a large presence this year at GDC. GFXSpeak discusses the changing tide. "The mobile gaming market is growing fast, enabled by smart phones and devices that are getting smarter with every turn of the Moore’s Law crank. The new processors including Nvidia’s Tegra, the Imagination-fueled OMAP processors and Intel’s coming Medfield; Freescale, Marvell, and others all do 3D as a matter of course. Anjuta Project Wizards for AMD, NVidia and Intel OpenCL SDK

Aiming at increasing the OpenCL developing, I created some wizards to start up an OpenCL application project using the SDK from NVidia, AMD or Intel. I've used Anjuta DevStudio on Linux. There is a lack of OpenSource IDE and tools to develop GPU applications, these wizards help us to create OpenCL applications based on templates and, thus, to decrease the learning curve.

Japan takes top spot with K Computer running at 8.16 Petaflops

This June saw an exciting Top 500 Supercomputer Site list. Japan bumped China out of first place with their 8162 TeraFlop 548,352 core machine. Interesting with this machine is that it runs on CPU's only, no GPU's. NVIDIA holds on to 3 of the top 10 spots. NVIDIA Enables New Video Processing, I/O Capability for Quadro and Tesla GPUs with OpenCL and CUDA

At the International Broadcasting Convention 2011NVIDIA introduced NVIDIA GPUDirect for Video. This technology enables application developers to deliver higher quality, more realistic on-air graphics -- or take faster advantage of the parallel processing power of the GPU for image processing. This is done by permitting industry-standard video I/O devices to communicate directly with NVIDIA professional Quadro and Tesla graphics processing units (GPUs) at ultra-low latency. Nick Rashby, President, AJA Video Systems says "this will allow developers whose apps support AJA video I/O products to take better advantage of the power of NVIDIA Quadro and Tesla GPUs, resulting in low-latency access for both graphics compositing and general purpose processing using CUDA or OpenCL, with all the I/O and performance they depend on from AJA."

Sony Creative Software Ships Vegas Pro 11 with improved OpenCL rendering

Sony Vegas Pro 11 Collection fuses 3D, HD and 3D editing tools with Blu-ray authoring software and improved rendering through OpenCL support. Version 11's GPU-accelerated video processing, through supported OpenCL cards from AMD and NVIDIA, should also give editors smoother previews and faster renders of composites and scenes heavy with video effects, transitions, pans, crops and tracking motion. SC11 roundup with OpenCL and much more

V3 has a clean and concise roundup from this years SC11. In a nut shell, SC11 brought questions and answers to the looming exascale supercomputing promise. Intel presented Knight's Corner chips clocking in at 1TB in benchmarks; NVIDIA brought OpenACC which is backed by partners such as Cray and Oak Ridge National Laboratory; AMD and Cray pick up where IBM dropped out with an announced a deal to provide a petaflop-scale scientific analysis cluster for the University of Illinois; and the Khronos Group announced another milestone for OpenCL, bringing the version up to 1.2.
