Google's recently announced Android 4.0 platform, and related Ice Cream Sandwich SDK, include many new media capabilities. One very nice addition is the introduction for low-level streaming multimedia. To support this low-level streaming, the platform introduces a new native API based on the Khronos OpenMAX AL 1.0.1 API. This API is implemented on the same underlying services as the platform’s existing OpenSL ES API, so developers can make use of both APIs together if needed. Tools support for low-level streaming multimedia will be available in an upcoming release of the Android NDK. Learn more about OpenMAX AL on the Khronos Group website.

The OpenCL hardware acceleration features in the Generic Graphics Library (GEGL) were originally developed as part of Google's Summer of Code in 2009 and 2011 and finished over the winter with sponsorship from AMD and help by MulticoreWare. On supported systems, this feature should greatly speed up processor intensive operations. Users have to start the application with the command line parameter GEGL_USE_OPENCL=yes to use OpenCL.

At Google I/O ZiiLABS, in co-operation with Symphony Teleca, demonstrated how OpenCL can be used to deliver significant compute acceleration on Android platforms. The tablet demonstration of a new camera application, built by Symphony Teleca, uses OpenCL to implement a number of key image processing effects, comparing the performance of the algorithms implemented in both 'C' and OpenCL. The OpenCL code exploits the performance and flexibility of the underlying ZMS-40's media processing array to deliver significant advantages over CPU-only code.
