GDC was a beehive of activity with companies madly competing for attention. The Khronos Group was no exception, as they had a large presence this year at GDC. GFXSpeak discusses the changing tide. "The mobile gaming market is growing fast, enabled by smart phones and devices that are getting smarter with every turn of the Moore’s Law crank. The new processors including Nvidia’s Tegra, the Imagination-fueled OMAP processors and Intel’s coming Medfield; Freescale, Marvell, and others all do 3D as a matter of course. AMD recently released Catalyst™ 11.3. The AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) OpenCL runtime is now enabled by default within AMD Catalyst. Applications that leverage OpenCL for GPU based compute tasks will automatically benefit from the significant performance boost that this provides.

The AMD APP SDK 2.4 for OpenCL development is now available, providing significant enhancements in performance: reduced kernel launch time, increased transfer speed and reduced latency for PCI transfer, and zero copy transfer for APUs, and introduces support for AMD A-Series APUs. CPU support is extended with the addition of support both for Images and for Double Precision floating point (cl_khr_fp64 extension).

Google's recently announced Android 4.0 platform, and related Ice Cream Sandwich SDK, include many new media capabilities. One very nice addition is the introduction for low-level streaming multimedia. To support this low-level streaming, the platform introduces a new native API based on the Khronos OpenMAX AL 1.0.1 API. This API is implemented on the same underlying services as the platform’s existing OpenSL ES API, so developers can make use of both APIs together if needed.
