Khronos Demonstrates OpenCL Momentum at SC09

The Khronos™ Group today announced strong industry support and a wide range of shipping products utilizing OpenCL™ at SC09 (an international conference for high-performance computing). A number of demonstrations and tutorials from Khronos Group members highlighting the power and scalability of OpenCL will also be a major part of SC09. Khronos released a conformance suite for the OpenCL 1.0 specification in May 2009 that exhaustively tests both the functionality and numerical accuracy of OpenCL implementations before they are licensed to use the OpenCL trademark. A number of shipping products from working group members have successfully passed OpenCL conformance including products from AMD, Apple and NVIDIA. Khronos Group announces WebGL Draft Specification

The Khronos Group announced the unveiling of the WebGL Draft Specification. WebGL is a cross-platform, royalty-free web standard for a low-level 3D graphics API based on OpenGL ES 2.0, exposed through the HTML5 Canvas element as Document Object Model interfaces. Khronos has setup a wiki, forums and a public mailing list for greater community involvement.

Khronos Drives Momentum of Parallel Computing Standard with Release of OpenCL 1.1 Specification

The Khronos™ Group today announced the ratification and public release of the OpenCL™ 1.1 specification, the latest version of the open, royalty-free standard for cross-platform, parallel programming of modern processors. OpenCL 1.1 adds significant functionality for enhanced parallel programming flexibility, functionality and performance including:

  • New data types including 3-component vectors and additional image formats;
  • Handling commands from multiple hosts and processing buffers across multiple devices;
  • Operations on regions of a buffer including read, write and copy of 1D, 2D or 3D rectangular regions;
  • Enhanced use of events to drive and control command execution;
  • Additional OpenCL C built-in functions such as integer clamp, shuffle and asynchronous strided copies;
  • Improved OpenGL interoperability through efficient sharing of images and buffers by linking OpenCL and OpenGL events.

Bullet 2.77 Physics SDK adds OpenCL cloth simulation

The new Bullet 2.77 Physics SDK features OpenCL cloth simulation, contributed by AMD under the permissive ZLib license. The OpenCL implementation has been tested on AMD and NVIDIA GPUs for Windows and Linux as well as the Apple OpenCL implementation for GPUs on Mac OSX Snow Leopard. The full source code and precompiled Windows executable demos are available for download.

NVIDIA releases Quadr 4000 for Mac - brings CUDA and a boost for OpenCL

NVIDIA has brought the Fermi graphics architecture to the Mac with the launch of the Quadro 4000 for Mac. The workstation-class video supports the same features as its Windows counterpart and focuses heavily on general-purpose computing. OpenCL in Snow Leopard also gets a boost from this release and can greatly accelerate apps that are using NVIDIA's own CUDA language as well, such as video processing in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.
