Android Developer Day at GDC introduces you to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) audio and OpenSL ES

Glenn Kasten and Jean-Michael Trivi both with Google, will be introducing you to the Android release 2.3 (Gingerbread) native audio APIs based on the Khronos Group OpenSL ES standard. Starting with a brief history of OpenSL ES and an introduction to the OpenSL ES object / interface model and initialization process, followed by the Android native audio APIs and their relation to standard OpenSL ES. Highlighted by some typical audio needs for game and other interactive apps with example code fragments for each use case. Be sure to make it to this programming tutorial on Tuesday March 1st from 10:00-5:00 in Room 121, North Hall.

See Khronos and COLLADA at GDC

Please visit Khronos at booth #1444 at the Game Developer Conference (GDC), March 2-4, 2011 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco to learn more about COLLADA. Khronos is also running a series of developer university sessions on Thursday, March 3rd, in Room 301 in the South Hall:

  • WebGL at 9AM
  • OpenGL at 10:30AM
  • Demos at 12 noon
  • COLLADA at 1:30PM
  • OpenCL at 3PM
  • Beer and demos at 4:30PM and finally Mobile APIs at 4:50PM.

Khronos Releases WebGL 1.0 Specification to Bring Accelerated 3D Graphics to the Web without Plugins

The Khronos™ Group today released the final WebGL™ 1.0 specification to enable hardware-accelerated 3D graphics in HTML5 Web browsers without the need for plug-ins. WebGL defines a JavaScript binding to OpenGL® ES 2.0 to allow rich 3D graphics within a browser on any platform supporting the industry-standard OpenGL or OpenGL ES graphics APIs. WebGL has the support of major silicon and browser vendors including Apple, Google, Mozilla and Opera with multiple browsers already shipping with WebGL implementations including the beta releases for Mozilla Firefox 4.0, all channels of Google Chrome 9.0, an Opera preview build, and Apple Mac OS Safari nightly builds.

OpenCL Studio 1.0 has been released!

OpenCL Studio combines OpenCL and OpenGL into a single integrated development environment for high performance computing. The feature rich editor, interactive scripting language and extensible plug-in architecture support the rapid development of complex parallel algorithms and accompanying visualization. The first production version of OpenCL Studio including instructional videos and demo applications are available online.

OpenGL ES Programming courses offered during May in Fremont, CA

OpenGL ES Programming provides programmers with interactive and hands-on sessions about graphics hardware, shading, data management, all through the modern OpenGL ES API. The course covers OpenGL ES 2.0 and the OpenGL ES Shading Language as well as the similarities and differences between OpenGL ES and desktop OpenGL 3.x/4.x. Topics include both the core languages and extensions such as those for double precision and interfacing with OpenGL 3D graphics buffers. This course is being offered in Fremont California, May 3-6 2011.

New OpenGL ES developer books from DMP

DMP recently launched two new OpenGL ES programming books in Japanese for developers. "This book is an excellent introduction to OpenGL ES to written by the experts at DMP, and provides invaluable insights into the emerging opportunities to create amazing, graphically rich experiences on millions of devices," wrote Neil Trevett, President of The Khronos Group. "Eisaku Ohbuchi and his colleagues at DMP have been involved in developing the OpenGL ES APIs for more than five years, and are well qualified to help developers learn to use these important standards," write Tom Olson, Chairman, OpenGL ES Working Group, The Khronos Group. Both books are available through the Khronos Groups online developer books library.

IBM releases OpenCL Common Runtime for Linux on x86 architecture

OpenCL™ Common Runtime for Linux® on x86 architecture is an OpenCL layered product that improves the OpenCL programming experience by alleviating the programmer from the burden of managing multiple OpenCL platforms and duplicated resources. It is a dynamic shared library that resides between an OpenCL application and one or more OpenCL implementations, such as those developed by AMD and NVIDIA® .

The Common Runtime supports all of the OpenCL v1.1 APIs in a single OpenCL platform consisting of all devices provided by the underlying implementations. This technology provides an integrated environment that can improve application portability as well as simplifying multi-device programming. The Common Runtime has been tested on the IBM System x® iDataPlex™ dx360 M3 with at least one NVIDIA® Tesla™ M2050 running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5. In addition, OpenCL v1.1 implementations from AMD and NVIDIA were used in conjunction with the OpenCL Common Runtime.
